Hospice

Hospice is a concept of caring for terminally ill people of all ages when one’s disease can no longer be reversed or cured and one has a life expectancy of months not years.  Hospice care is not just for you, but for your family as well.  You will receive medical care and symptom relief.  Both you and your family will receive psychological, social and spiritual support and treatment.  Your family will continue to receive these services after your death.

Hospice Care Guidelines are specific symptoms or conditions that are being caused by a progressive disease that make you eligible for hospice.

As a patient in the hospital, you or your family may request to speak with a social worker or member of the palliative care team to inquire about hospice care options.  If hospice care is chosen, the social worker will coordinate your hospice care with your physician, nurse, family, the hospice agency, the facility and insurance.

If you would like information about Medicare’s hospice benefits, click here. (http://www.medicare.gov/Coverage/Search/Results.asp?State=NJ%7CNew+Jersey&Coverage=36%7CHospice+Care&submitState=View+Results+%3E).

Note that if you choose hospice care, you will waive certain benefits related to your terminal illness, such as acute care hospitalization benefits, as you have chosen not to pursue treatment for your terminal diagnosis.  However, Medicare will still pay for covered services for any health plan problems that are not related to your terminal illness.  Also, if you have an HMO Medicare plan, your Medicare will revert to federal Medicare.
